Office Tech 1-3 & Typist

Program Overview

These competency-based courses are designed to assist students to acquire the necessary skills, and perform a variety of clerical duties, of a routine and recurring nature. The topics include Office Procedures, Records Management, Business Math, Business English, Soft/Employability Skills for the 21st century, and Typist/Keyboarding. The Computer Operation/1: Foundations course (emphasis in Microsoft Word) & Computer Operation/2: Applications course (emphasis in Microsoft Excel) are also highly recommended. All of the aforementioned courses can assist students in becoming Office Technicians for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) once they have passed the LAUSD in-house testing process. These courses can also assist students to become hireable within the public and private sectors.


Typist: Keyboarding (90 Hours)


Brief Course Description:


This course is an introduction to proper keyboarding techniques, mastery of alphabetic, numeric and symbol keys, and fundamental skill development of speed and accuracy. The course includes an introduction, safety and ergonomics, computer hardware, software/app, and operating system, alphabetic keys, number and symbol keys, timed writings, formatting, employability skills and resume preparation, and a final evaluation.

Office Technician/1: Fundamentals (135 Hours)


Brief Course Description:


First in a sequence of three courses designed for Office Technician training.  Provides instruction in telephone techniques, email, mail, office tools and equipment, data verification/proofreading, records management, reference materials, travel arrangements, grammar, spelling and vocabulary, punctuation, business letter and report writing, reading, listening and speaking skills, and employability and resume preparation.

Office Technician/2: Trade Mathematics (90 Hours)


Brief Course Description:


Second in a sequence of three designed for Office Technician training.  Provides instruction in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentage, base, and rate, discounts and interest rates, measurements, tables and graphs, calculator operation, and employability and resume preparation.

Office Technician/3: Trade Employability Skills (55 Hours)


Brief Course Description:

Last in a sequence of three designed for Office Technician training.  Provides instruction in hard skills vs soft skills, applied academic skills, critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills, personal qualities, resource management, information use, communication skills, systems thinking, technology use, resume, cover letter and/or portfolio, online job searching platforms, online job application, interview skills and follow-up letters, upgrading skills, and entrepreneurial skills.
